I must say I am more then impressed by These New Puritans album 'Hidden'. I didn't know what to expect from them at all. Would they keep the same sound as 'B.E.A.T. P.Y.R.A.M.I.D.' or move on to something else? All I have to say is that transition of the two albums is more then brilliant.
The album open opens with 'Time Xone' a track made up of nothing but orchestra style instruments like tuba and lots of woodwinds. From here you have 'We Want War', their first single, and by far the best example of their transition. If you play this track then 'Elvis' the sound is completely different. After 'W.W.W.' you have 'Three Thousand' which is a track to me that, with the crash and backing brass in the background, reminds me of the sound of, dare I say it, the White Stripes song 'Conquest'. Only this part though. I must say that I would pick a TNPS show over a White Stripes on any given day. After '3k' you have 'Hologram', which by far, I must say is my favourite track of the whole album. The pounding piano keys transitioning to vibes, and then onto brass is just amazing. Following 'Hologram' is 'Attack Music' which I think would be my second favourite. This is the first song on the album I actually learned how to play and rewrote the lyrics in case I get into a cover song type of mood. The first time I heard this track I was smoking in next to pitch black darkness under a tree, and I must say, the song all together is so upbeat I almost got up to dance. After 'A.M.' it is 'Fire Power' which is probably my least favourite track on the album only because is mostly drums with deep bass synth backing repetitive vocals. It's not a bad track, it just isn't my favourite.... I like the woodwind ending of the track though if it helps my case any?
After 'Fire Power' is 'Orion' which has deep drums, woodwind/brass, and a very droney choir in the back. Overall, this track has a very greek-ish sound to it. When I hear it I can almost visualize walking around the Parthenon. Following up 'Orion' is 'Canticle' which is mostly an intermission track but it definitely takes advantage of the woodwinds and brass like 'Time Xone' which I definitely liked. Next up is 'Drum Courts-Where Corals Lie'. It is definitely a track that grows on you. It starts out just drums, woodwinds, and low-spoken vocals, but builds up beat by beat into a more in depth track. Halfway through it breaks into an intermission of synth, choir, and soft sung lyrics. From here the track goes from less 'Drum Courts' and more 'Where Corals Lie'. It is really, to me anyways, is like two songs mashed together. Second to last is 'White Chords' which is definitely, from what I've seen online, a lot of peoples favourite track and it is easy to see why. 'White Chords' is the 'Colours' of 'HIDDEN'. Although it isn't as erratic as 'Colours' and is mostly soft, it is probably the song with the most guitar on the whole album. This track really shows how great of a song writer Jack Barnett is too.
The last on the track is called '5', for what reason? I haven't the slightest clue, but the whole track is vibes, choir, woodwinds, brass, and vocals that come in towards the end of track. No drums and no guitars but that doesn't mean that it is no good. I really believe it was the best track to close the album with. What is my overall thought of the album? FUCKING BRILLIANT! I don't care if me just being a fan influences my decision, because all-in-all this IS a good fucking album.
After posting this many of you have informed me that you did not like my review of the song 'Fire Power'. Although many of you are angry I must say it still brings me joy. Why? Because it shows many of you still have an opinion and are still passionate about the music you listen to.
